This beautiful building was on Rayen Avenue close to Elm Street. I'm familiar with it because for about five years I used to visit here once a week to take piano lessons from Sister Evelyn.
To get in, you would ring the doorbell and wait for one of the nuns to answer (sometimes it seemed like a really long time, but it was impolite to ring again). The double front doors opened into a small foyer and then into a big center hall with high ceilings and a hall tree. The two rooms across the front of the building were the music rooms. It was always very quiet and smelled like furniture polish.
The building was still standing in the 1960s, but I don't know when it was demolished.
It took me a few stares to reconcile this building with the one I also walked into for piano lessons with Sister Evelyn. She usually took a taxi to our school once a week and reeled her students in one at a time as soon as she got there. But now and then I had to go to the convent instead. I guess I didn't recognize it because I was shorter then, and really not prone to looking at the buildings on W. Rayen when I was, say, 12 years old, and it was always the front door...
