Former slaves in Youngstown

After the Civil War ended, many former slaves moved north in an attempt to find a place less critical of the color of their skin. Many chose to make Youngstown their home. It developing industry made it a place where jobs were often available to blacks at a time when they couldn't find jobs elsewhere. This woman here is an example of a former slave who made her home in Youngstown.
